P.A.N.S. is the new acronym for: Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. It was created to expand on the diagnosis of P.A.N.D.A.S. P.A.N.D.A.S. is an acronym for: Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal infections, a diagnosis which is controversial. PANDAS describes a faction of children who present with a rapid onset of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) symptoms or tic disorder following a streptococcal infection. With some children the onset may be totally debilitating. With others, the children somehow find ways of functioning in school or other activities; but then symptoms increase tremendously when they get home. One thing is very clear, and that is that the prior normal functioning child has disappeared. Rapid Onset OCD has been documented since the 1800's, but has just recently been associated with streptococcal infections.
